Nerd

I am a self professed nerd. This is the parent directory to all of the extremely geeky stuff I dig up on the net.

I attended the first meeting of the Vancouver Drupal Users Group (VANDUG) tonight and let very excited about the project and community. I am lucky to live in Vancouver, which seems to be a Drupal magnet, with the OSCMS conference last month, and Bryght next door.

There was a free food, free wifi, free beer and the free exchange of ideas... and a ton of Macs. It doesn't get much better! Thanks to Boris for putting it and to Take 5 for staying open a bit late. Rather than write more about the meeting itself, I'll leave you with the Basecamp message I typed to my colleagues when I got home.

Google is already legendary for keeping its cards close to its chest. However, it doesn’t take a room full of PhD’s at the Googleplex to see that hosting is the next logical step. I hate unfounded blog predictions as much as the next guy, so I’ll give you a dozen reasons this will roll out this very year.

If it doesn’t happen, call me Dovorak. Actually, I would blame Google: they are in the position to dominate the web hosting industry within months if they wanted to! Look at this list to see how the pieces are coming together:

  1. Adsense

The summer is in full swing now and with three days left before holidays, I am determined to at get some sort of tan this summer. On that note, I will be cutting back all internet use to the bare-bones until after labour day. I will only be using the net for email, school and necessary searches/work. No RSS Feeds, Blogs, Google News, CBC, NY Times - I might even cut out Pitchfork!

Before I stop blogging for a few weeks, I'll give a quick update on things going on with me or catching my attention. Here goes the categorical list:

Music

Best Album of the Summer (so far): The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema

Based on the recent CBC Radio 3 Podcast and other information, I am going out on a limb and saying that iTunes 4.9 will very likely be out this morning, on Tuesday June 28th. If not, it will be out within the week.

The reason that I am saying this is my freshly download episode, aptly titled "iTunes premire" is billing itself as "iTunes Featured". Breaking from it's usual weekly publishing schedule (the last Episode was only 3 days prior) DJ Grant Lawrence announces that:

"...this is a very special edition of our show show because this very Podcast is being promoted by iTunes who just entered the world of Podcasting themselves. Welcome iTunes, thanks for the attention. So for all our regular subscribers bear with me for a second while I welcome everyone from the iTunes site who might possibly be listening to a Podcast for the very first time."

It seems as though my quest for productivity is taking up a lot more time than I actually spend implementing it. It seems that I am not the only one.

One of my latest finds is an add-on for Mail aptly named "Mail Act-On" which allows the archival and sorting of mail via keystrokes. There's a bunch of great stuff you can do, as these tips show.

Up next is DIY Planner, a collection of free productivity templates, even for a Hipster PDA (see the Hipster PDA edition).
